9 Email Marketing Do’s & Don’ts – An Infographic

1. Send your email from a person, not the company

When you send email from a real person, your email open rate increases – plain and simple. This is because – based on the past test we have conducted – recipients are typically more likely to trust a personalized sender name and email address than a generic one.

2. Design your newsletter to fit your brand

Your email campaigns should match your brand’s look and feel. If you are using a template, you might want to customize it to include your company’s colours and logo in the header.

3. Keep it short and sweet

Your subject line should be a maximum of 50 characters. It may prove difficult to get your point across in so few words, but it’s effective.

4. Use images, people are more visual these days

People process visual information such as pictures, images and graphics exponentially faster than they process textual information.

5. Schedule at the right time

More emails are sent on Tuesdays and Thursdays than any other day of the week. Sending on off days can improve your open rates.

6. Avoid spam-trigger words

Avoid words that will likely cause your email to be picked up by spam filters, such as “clearance”, “click here”, “give it away” spam trigger words and phrases Io avoid. Also, don‘t use exclamation marks and all CAPS in the email subject line, as these have a good chance of getting flagged.

7. Keep a publishing calendar

A regular newsletter is a commitment. Before you send an email to your entire list, send a test version to a  test account using each of the big email providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Live/MSN and any account using an Outlook client).
